How To: Engraved Text Effect in Photoshop

A simple effect, yet, an eye catching and appealing effect is easily done in Photoshop with a couple live effects. There are two types of engraved text, I’m going to show you both.

First open up a blank image, in this case I went with 500×200 because that is the size of my post images. Next fill the background with a color of your choice, or leave it transparent. Now create a new layer and add some text, make sure the font that you use is large, and bold or thick; we want our text thick, large and bold so we can clearly see the engraved effect.

Once your text is added, I recommend starting out with white, double click the layer in the layers tab; this should bring up the live effects window. Once we are in the live effects window we are going to add a color overlay. Make sure you use a dark grey, but not too dark.

Next we want to add an Inner Shadow; the best part about this effect is that we don’t have to adjust any settings, unless you want to of course.

The next type of “Engraved Style” appears in the post image as well, it’s the text tutorial. Of course this is done by some more easy live effects.

Again, the first thing we want to do is add a color overlay. There is no customization here, but the color must be the color of your background. If your background is white then make the color overlay white too. Next we are going to Bevel and Emboss the text, the setting Pillow Emboss will make the text pop.

The last step is to add a stroke to the text; a stroke is an outline that can be very customizable. In this step we want to make a gradient foreground to transparent. Again we want to make sure that it is the color of our background.
